According to InformationWeek "Google (NSDQ: GOOG) today began giving its Gmail users access to IMAP, an e-mail protocol that allows users to synchronize their e-mail across multiple devices." With so little information available about the so-called gPhone, users can only imagine what its features are. One would imagine that a good quality phone call is what most users want. If the gPhone can't give you a good signal and clear voice, then would you still want to own one? If the gPhone can provide the entertainment value of an iPod and Gameboy, the ability to do a little work on the side like on a palm but drops calls, then it's just another mobile device.

If you don't know yet the Google gPhone will be running Google's own Operating System which is based on Linux. Linux is an open source Operating System. With its new Operating System Google is threatening some of the biggest names in the mobile OS market, names like Mircosoft, Palm and Symbian.
Google has decided to display ads on the new gPhone mobile device as a way to generating revenue. In exchange for displaying ads the gPhone mobile device may be free or bought at a discounted rate. This may or may not get a positive response from users. People may feel that paying for a phone is worth the price of avoiding unwanted ads. Although this ad-based model may provide a great benefit to the students, low-income families and in countries where people cannot easily afford to pay for mobile phones. Google's new ad-based cellular mobile device may truly connect the world like never before.

The iPod is a great little music player but if you didn't have iTunes to provide the music, would you still love it? So the question is will Google start its own version of iTunes? Well lets assume and Google did start its own iTunes-like service and called it something like "gTunes," well you have got to bet it will be something we've never seen before. Google's success lies in its ability to do things a little bit different then its competition. Its ideas aren't new but it is able to take the ideas of others and make them its own. Just look at gMail. When gMail was first launched the mere thought of a gigabyte storage for an e-mail account was unheard of. At the time users on forums were begging for an invite and some were buying them on eBay for as much as $20. Although the gPhone is less like an iPod and more like a ultra-portable laptop. It will without a doubt play mp3's. Almost all phones on the market today play mp3's. If Google can take on the Apple iPhone, why not knockout the iPod in the process? Google has denied rumors that it would sell music online but who really knows what Google will do once the gPhone is out on the market. In the meantime Google can satisfy its entertainment hungry users with its powerful YouTube video streaming service.

Google Apps offers online software similar to Microsoft's Office software. The big difference is that you can run it from almost anywhere since it's always online.
