According to InformationWeek "Google (NSDQ: GOOG) today began giving its Gmail users access to IMAP, an e-mail protocol that allows users to synchronize their e-mail across multiple devices." The gPhone believed to be in development by Google could also benefit from this move. This is just more evidence that leads us to believe that the gPhone is in development. Google may be putting all its necessary pieces into place before the big announcement.

With so little information available about the so-called gPhone, users can only imagine what its features are. One would imagine that a good quality phone call is what most users want. If the gPhone can't give you a good signal and clear voice, then would you still want to own one? Evidence of the Google "gPhone" Phone Development

So what evidence proves that the gPhone is really in development and just blog candy to tease the masses. Well for one is Google's bid to buy the spectrum once used by broadcast television. This spectrum could be used for mobile internet access. Another is Google's purchase of the internet startup Jaiku which specializes in instant messaging and mobile phone applications. And the last one comes from an Indian Express story which presents evidence that Google is applying for a number of patents dealing in the realm of mobile devices.

Well lets assume and Google did start its own iTunes-like service and called it something like "gTunes," well you have got to bet it will be something we've never seen before. Google's success lies in its ability to do things a little bit different then its competition. Its ideas aren't new but it is able to take the ideas of others and make them its own. Just look at gMail. When gMail was first launched the mere thought of a gigabyte storage for an e-mail account was unheard of. At the time users on forums were begging for an invite and some were buying them on eBay for as much as $20. Although the gPhone is less like an iPod and more like a ultra-portable laptop. It will without a doubt play mp3's. Almost all phones on the market today play mp3's. If Google can take on the Apple iPhone, why not knockout the iPod in the process? Google has denied rumors that it would sell music online but who really knows what Google will do once the gPhone is out on the market. In the meantime Google can satisfy its entertainment hungry users with its powerful YouTube video streaming service.
